Yahoo Social Media Tools

In October 2005 there was a story on search engine watch that pointed out that Yahoo was trying to trademark this Phrase:

Dig It. Tag It. Share It

My first reaction was WTF, talk about trying to trademark ideas that are already well in use, I mean, would Digg have something to say about that? Anyway, I bookmarked it in Delicious and tagged it “blog_this” which is how I procrastinate on writing, and forgot about it.

Well Yahoo has come out with a set of “social media” buttons to add to your site, right now it includes “bookmark in delicious” “email” “blog on yahoo 360″ and “print” (printing not really social media). Anyway, “dig it” isn’t there, probably because Yahoo doesn’t “own digg”. Personally I would like to see a “tag in technorati” and “co-comment”.

One thing that is easy to miss though is a statement at the bottom of the page which speaks volumes about Yahoo’s philosophy and approach to these tools:

Also, if you write or post about Yahoo!’s action buttons or social media tools, we’d be thrilled if you’d add the tag “social media” to blog posts, screenshots, or other stuff you’re tagging. This will help us pay attention to the conversation about these buttons wherever it’s taking place across the Web. (Thanks!)

Ok, Yahoo is getting on board the cluetrain.
